STRATA KK PROVIDED JGC WITH A MODERN, CLOUD-BASED SOLUTION TO REPLACE EXISTING LEGACY SOFTWARE.

THE CLIENT

JGC Holdings Corporation is a global engineering company based in Yokohama, Japan. They specialize in large-scale energy projects, ranging from liquefied natural gas to renewable energies. They've implemented over 20,000 projects across 50 countries.

THE CHALLENGE

As a well-established company, JGC identified a pain point common to many large corporations. The legacy systems that served them so well in the past are incompatible with a cloud-based model that enables employees and clients location and platform-independent access to essential data.

JGC could see the enormous benefits of utilizing modern software in the cloud and from the browser. They wanted to examine and understand the implications of improving existing legacy desktop software versus modernizing their approach.

While their internal technical teams possess a profound understanding of the problem that their legacy software solves, those technical skills often do not translate well into web platform development. It is for this reason that JGC engaged the Strata team.

THE SOLUTION

Strata worked closely with internal staff to fully understand and replicate internal legacy software dealing with hydraulic flow calculations and mapping. This is a core service that Strata offers clients; analyzing the problem and refining the requirements to offer the best solution.

The proof-of-concept platform runs entirely in the browser and supports the same data formats as the previous system. The system is fully supported on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.

By replacing the legacy database with a cloud-based system, JGC was able to leverage significant security benefits. Data security risks are substantial when a database backend is replicated onto a laptop. JGC's data security risks were lowered significantly by relocating their data to a cloud database secured with two-factor authentication.

This web-based platform encourages collaborative work, is easily extendable, and highly accessible compared to the legacy desktop software.

THE OUTCOME

JGC experienced a clear demonstration, using live data typically consumed by a legacy system, of how simple it is to provide a modern alternative to legacy systems. Thus, positioning them to leapfrog their competition.

In today's world, competitive advantage is not only a component of domain knowledge, but also of the ability to leverage cutting-edge interfaces to improve the interactive experience of clients, customers, and staff.
